Some people’s thoughts tend to be more negative than positive, and for other people, the opposite is true.
Here’s a great way to move from the first group into the second group.
Our thoughts typically spawn from subconscious questions, for example a negatively biased mind, could initiate thoughts with:
“What will I do if this or that happens?
Why does this always happen to me?
Why can’t I do this?”
The conscious mind will then be neutral in answering our questions as this becomes conscious thought. It looks at all the evidence in our experience and creates the subsequent thought.
So the key to train the mind to ask better questions
“What’s great about this?
Why is this exactly what I need?
What will I be able to learn from this?”
When we catch a negative thought, try to re-frame the question positively and ask it again.
Better questions lead to better answers, and hence better thoughts, feelings, actions, and everything else!
Keep catching the negative thoughts, reconsider the question and allow the possibility of something positive.
Eventually the mind adjusts to the new regime.
Gandhi wisely informed us that:
“Your beliefs become your thoughts,
Your thoughts become your words,
Your words become your actions,
Your actions become your habits,
Your habits become your values,
Your values become your destiny.”
