A friend of mine has worked at a homeless shelter for many years. After listening often to people complaining about small problems like the weather, she and the team started to redirect this negativity by asking people a simple question:
“Where’s the gift?”
Suddenly the users of the shelter were encouraging their minds to find positive elements to their situation. Even when people were facing difficult and challenging situations, they became able to acknowledge the question; and find a reply to it.
From her experience dealing with many people, often in unimaginably tough situations, “Even when things are bleak or you run into that sameness… the gifts are there.”
There’s lots more information and exercises that take advantage of our brains’ neuroplasticity traits, turning negative thought habits patterns into more positive one’s, in our book 100 Steps Happier. Or just send me an email!
