Do you want more money or do you want more freedom?
Freedom is as highly prized today as it was 2000 years ago when Epictetus wrote “Freedom is secured not by the fulfilling of men’s desires, but by the removal of desire.”
Socioeconomic freedom only really provides the potential for happiness. It influences our happiness similarly to money, in the way that between having none, and having a basic amount, can make a significant positive impact on our capacity to be happy. Similarly however, after that base level is passed, as money or external freedom increases, the amount of positive impact drops quickly.
Chances are you’re a long way from starvation, exposure to harsh environments, and real political oppression. The research data suggests that after our basic needs are met (Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs) focusing on increasing our money, power and apparent freedom has little, to eventually no positive impact on our overall well-being, or our potential for happiness.
There must be more to happiness than just having the potential for happiness. How do we actively fulfil that potential?
We fulfil our potential for happiness by cultivating natural thought habit patterns oriented towards happiness, based on gratitude, positive emotions, and a realistic present perspective on the present moment.
We can fulfil our potential for happiness by incorporating into our lives a sense of meaningful contribution, with nourishing relationships.
This comes from hard work, taking responsibility for our happiness, developing control over our thoughts and emotions, and taking actions aligned with our values, that fulfil our enormous capacity for happiness.
A Good Way To Think is here to guide you through exactly that. Will you join us?
